Hydrogen O-Rings: Reliability for Critical Applications

Hydrogen systems require sealing solutions capable of delivering exceptional performance under extreme operating conditions.

Due to the extremely small size of hydrogen molecules, sealing components must provide excellent chemical compatibility, pressure resistance, long term durability, and maximum operational safety.

Our sealing materials for hydrogen applications have undergone compatibility testing at the independent laboratory TÜV SÜD, in accordance with the requirements of SAE J2600.

The tests confirmed that the evaluated compounds maintain their key physical characteristics after hydrogen exposure, with no evidence of:

  • explosive decompression damage;
  • swelling exceeding 25%;
  • shrinkage greater than 1%;
  • weight loss exceeding 10%.

The tested compounds demonstrated excellent compatibility with hydrogen under the specified test conditions, supporting their use in demanding hydrogen environments where sealing reliability, material stability and long-term performance are critical.

Research on Hydrogen Permeability

Beyond compatibility testing, Oringone performs dedicated hydrogen permeability analyses to evaluate hydrogen transmission rates through different elastomer compounds under pressures of up to 250 bar.

These tests enable us to develop increasingly efficient O-Rings and sealing solutions capable of meeting the stringent requirements of the rapidly growing hydrogen industry.
